Catherine Dold has written about health and the environment for The New York Times (science pages), Smithsonian, Discover, Self, Health, Cosmopolitan, and many other national publications. She has also worked as an editorial consultant to many medical and scientific institutions, such as
Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Harvard Medical School, the American Medical Association, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Institutes of Health. Consulting services have included writing and editing feature articles, patient education materials, journal articles, interactive media content, newsletters, book chapters, CME programs, and technical reports, as well as managing the work of large teams of co-authors.

 

Patient Education/Medical Writing
One of Ms. Dold’s specialties is creating materials for health consumers. Patient education projects have included booklets on depression and hepatitis C infection, interactive programs for patients, and chapters of a family medical guide. She has also written many magazine and newsletter feature articles on health issues, covering topics ranging from genetic testing to alternative medicine. She also writes and edits materials for professional scientific and medical audiences, such as journal articles, CME programs, pharmaceutical manuals, and technical reports.  

 

Environmental and General Science Writing

Another area of expertise is the environment. In magazine, newspaper, and online feature articles, Ms. Dold has covered a wide variety of environmental  topics, including shark fishing in Costa Rica, hearing abilities of manatees, prairie dog politics, grizzly bear genetics, and the making of wildlife films. Other science features have covered how search dogs track down lost people, cannibalism among the Anasazi, and the oldest house in Colorado.

 

Editorial Project Management

Ms. Dold also manages large editorial projects. Such projects typically involve setting the editorial schedule for a team of co-authors, coordinating the copy submissions of all co-authors, editing or rewriting all submitted copy and writing some sections, assembling and editing graphic elements and front and back matter, and working with designers, web programmers, or printers.

 

Professional Affiliations

Ms. Dold has taught journalism to graduate students and is an active member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the National Association of Science Writers. A graduate of New York University’s graduate-level Science and Environmental Reporting Program, she is a former staff editor and writer for Audubon magazine and for the Natural Resources Defense Council.
